Summertime in Maine can be so great. Last weekend was like a condensed version of it. I'm still recovering.
A computerless, digital cameraless, palm pilotless Dave Cash was here for almost 2 weeks grokking on the lake, getting the hang of a bicycle with gears, taking in some of the Maine film festival in Waterville. It was good to have someone to geekspeak with while engaged in summertime activities like kayaking and festivaling.
A former SHS student, Karen Whittington, who lives in Portland now, came up for the weekend. Karen has turned out just perfect; I give her an A+.
Friday, a wicked hot day, the three of us biked in Acadia where the carriage paths go along one inviting pond after another. At about the 18 mile mark after a long slow uphill stretch, No Swimming signs were reinterpreted in the light of immediate heat-index data, various states of undress were achieved, and swimming was a happening thing.
On Saturday morning we always drag our house guests over to the Unity Farmer's Market so they can see how Melissa's excellent imitation of Sr. Bernadette (Benedictines, but we call them the Little Sisters of Marketing) compares to the real thing.
And Sunday was the WERU (think WWOZ North) Full Circle Summer Fair in Union, where this character with the cool shirt was wandering around.
During a quick rain, we sat in a barn and watched a live chess game. Home made costumes, a lot of tin foil, a jester coach with a megaphone, a pink haired black veiled angel of death, a couple of eagle scouts with an army cot for dead piece removal, a lot of chatter and group decisions: nobody combines hokiness with imagination and the will to have a good time like Central Maine hippies.
