| Life is busy here in the summer; the pictures stay in the camera too long. A few weeks ago, armed with a good dose of Claritin, I walked at lunchtime through the Arboretum at the University. Pinks and lavenders in all shades. There's a cool herb garden also with lots of ornamental rust. Expect more on rust soon. | |
![]() | Lillian and Ron Williams from Slidell were here to spend a week at the ritzy Samoset Resort on the coast in Rockland, and we were pleased to have them in our modest little B&B for a couple of nights. We got them into a canoe twice. One muggy night Melissa made us a picnic supper (lobster rolls, zinfandel, watermelon) and we paddled down the lake a ways, stopped and ate our picnic on some rocks. We do that whenever possible.![]() |
| At work we just got 500 MHz machines with 19 inch monitors, and that's about the nicest thing I can say about work. Everyone's busy learning Oracle stuff. Something called an Oracle Application Server now sits between the browser and the database and it knows CGI and HTML, which means that I don't have to write long programs in C to deliver the database goods back to the browser. Six months from now I should have a few Java applications under my belt. I'll be smarter. Really. You'll be able to look at me and think. Hmmm. This woman looks smart...she must know Java. Or maybe I'll just drink a lot of Java and fake it.
In my pro bono work, I'm adding a cemetery a week to the Historical Society web site. If they every move the site to a faster server, I'll add some search capability. | |
| Just for distraction-at-work value, tell me what you're currently reading. I'm in the middle of To Say Nothing of the Dog by Connie Willis: 21st century historians routinely travel back in time to do research; she blends science fiction, historical detail, and romantic comedy. So what are you reading?
