| It takes all summer to make a tomato in Maine, but when they finally get here, it's a treat. The vegetable garden at the Heron is in a good spot, getting heat gain off the building next to it, or maybe the bugs haven't found it yet. We haven't had a frost yet, which is kind of unusual.
This weekend was Commonground Fair a big organic growers and farmers fair which takes over our lives for the 3 days it lasts. This was its second year in Unity. Three of the 4 rooms were repeats from last year, and everybody re-upped for next year. It's like everyone is friends now and it was a party all weekend. Melissa, Pete, and I rode bikes there Friday; the fairgrounds is 3 miles from the Heron. On Saturday we went back in the evening for folk music under the stars. We joined all our guests for sandwiches and wine on picnic blankets and watched the full moon rise over the trees. The stage lights and sound system were solar powered.
The leaves are just barely beginning to turn; the first two weeks of October are usually primo fall foliage time. Lots of pumpkins around and many kinds of apples. We're serving apple everything at the Heron. After Floyd's remnants passed through here and dumped about 5 inches of rain, the lake rose at least a foot. We took up two sections of dock but left the platform, ramp and one dock section so we can still kayak and canoe. I hope to take a few days off in the second week of October to just take a breath and look around. |
