Wednesday, the day of the summer solstice, was a Perfect Maine Day. Eight years ago on the solstice, before blogging software was even a twinkle in a programmer's eye, I started the Picayunity.
Last Saturday I had to spend a couple of hours as the Unity rep at the Pittsfield recycling center, watching people bringing in household hazardous waste. A one day event for people to bring in scary things that have been in their basements for years. Hence these photos. The scariest thing someone brought in was 6 one pound vials of mercury.
Here's the June Mix. A couple of folks on it are among our July shows. And in August I've finally booked Ruthie Foster.
There's a little story behind each selection. Frinstance, Girlyman sang that Billy Bragg song when they were here and did their terrific harmonies on it. And Gandalf Murphy's hippie mysticism -- "the jukebox was playing Nirvana." I'll buy a song for one great phrase; I'll buy a song for a place mention.
The monthly mix is a record of what I liked out of what I was exposed to recently. It's not themed; so the transitions can be jarring. I put all the selections into a spreadsheet so I could sort different ways and see some patterns.
