 They call them bleeding hearts and hopefully it's a romantic reference and not a religious one. After work I move rocks. Last fall we dug a trench above the septic field. When you dig rocks out of the ground, it leaves a hole. 
If you dig enough rocks out of the ground the holes all connect together and you have a trench with a lot of rocks stacked up next to it. Now we are moving the rocks down to the dock line to sort of riprap it and stop erosion. Very satisfying work to do after programming all day.
I'm reading Nonzero, The Logic of Human Destiny by Robert Wright. It's about cultural evolution, how it's driven by non-zero sum "games" that lead to ever increasing and more global social complexity. He gets around the political incorrectness of ranking cultures by saying that humans are pretty much the same, but some of them live in cultural fossils. Hey, your mother dresses you funny and your culture is a fossil. Yes, that's much better. |
