Unity has had a very newsy week and some major additions to its unusual infrastructure. Last Friday, Bert Clifford, now 80 years old, had the opening ceremonies of Unity Foundation, a 5 million dollar capitalized public foundation, and groundbreaking for a building (across from the post office) that will house it. Venture philanthropy comes to Unity, Maine. Last night was the opening of Bert's other project, the Unity Performing Arts Center, a 200 seat, slant floor theatre with art gallery space and a professional kitchen and dining/meeting space. Dinner theater. Concerts. Film festivals. Whatever. The theater was built from an old barn; I like the way the old rough beams keep its history.

It was fun ushering, watching all the people pour in, and playing with friends Sue Saraiva, Susan Pierce, Lori Roming, Patricia, Mary, and new friends Dott and Susan. Imagining the life the theater has ahead of it made it special to be there on its opening night.
December 4th was the first night the lake skinned with ice; it broke up in a high wind the next day, but in the last week we have seldom been above the freezing mark, and often below zero at night, so she's good and frizzed now. With no snow on it, you can really hear the weird groans, moans, and jet trails that echo up and down the whole length of it as it adjusts to its icy top. | The seats have about 95 years of history in them, having been first in a theater in New York, then in Bowdoin College's theater before coming here.
Melissa catered the refreshments and will be the "dinner" in its first dinner theater show in January. She couldn't do it without "the kids." Lauren and Holly can lay out a mean cheese board.
The PU is my documentation space, where I keep notes and photos of things in my life and share them with people. I'm adding a Commonplace Book to help me remember what I've read. I'll start a new one each year.
