Feeling a desparate need to escape last weekend, we put the dogs in the car and stayed overnight in a cabin near Acadia. I didn't realize that dogs are quite welcome in the park. We had some fine walks on trails near Bubble Pond and between Sand Beach and Thunder Hole, with vistas combining fall color and ocean views. The pups definitely needed the practice of walking on a lead. Bar Harbor, which is such a zoo in the summer, was pleasantly relaxed with all its lights on in a long twilight and we dawdled there and had supper. Big cruise ships visit there now, bringing revenue without adding traffic.
We walked Sunday morning, skipping breakfast, and were first in line when Jordan Pond House opened. When it opens, the staff lines up facing the patrons's line and in a kind of promenade, each waiter leads each party to a table, and being first in line got us the best seat in the house. In any restaurant, I always want the table by the windows with a view. A little table by itself in a bay window is preferred.
My October music mix is all protest songs, including John Fogarty's "Deja Vu All Over Again" which is the current download above. My Eliza Gilkyson concert on Oct. 3 went well enough for a Monday night and I was able to donate some money to the local Democrats. The wine and cheese thing before the show had everyone feeling good. It was one of those performances where the audience and the performer seem to bond in some way, like a secular church experience. She ended the first set with Hiway 9 and ended the concert with the Woody Guthrie Peace song. It was the first time I introduced the band on stage. I had been afraid of doing that before, but I've done it a couple of times since and it's no big deal.
