I grabbed this picture of Wren wearing an official JazzFest bandana from my neice Britten's blog. They live in Corvalis, Oregon. One thing the papers I read didn't mention about the big Obama rally out there was that the Decemberists opened for him. When we were in N.O, standing in crunchy space at Louisiana Music Factory, Melissa spotted this great CD called Funky Kidz, which has kid songs by New Orleans bands including Amanda Shaw doing Dave Mallet's Garden Song. From the liner notes I learned that Richard Thompson wrote "Hokey Pokey," which is probably what It Is Really All About, but I guess I thought it was just a traditional song. I mean the Hokey Pokey is a long way from 1952 Vincent Black Lightning.
All spare time this week is about gardening, but here are a couple of things that caught my attention in my morning newspaper reading:
  • David Brooks: The Neural Buddhists: Morality and spirituality don't need rigid belief systems to flourish. They are built into us.
  • Thomas Friedman quotes the book I'm currently reading (Superclass): “Call it the triple deficit,” said Mr. Rothkopf. “A fiscal deficit that will soon have us choosing between rationed health care, sufficient education, adequate infrastructure and traditional levels of defense spending, a trade deficit that has us borrowing from our rivals to the point of real vulnerability, and a geopolitical deficit that is a legacy of Iraq, which may result in hesitancy to take strong stands where we must.”
The first rule of holes is when you’re in one, stop digging. When you’re in three, bring a lot of shovels.
The veggie garden is all rebuilt and sugar snap peas are a few inches high. Two new 12' by 2' raspberry beds are in. We're solidifying a bed around the veggie garden where sunflowers and moon flowers will grow. Our last frost date is the end of May, so the beds look bare, but as the season progresses, the OK Corrall garden will start to look like a garden basket overflowing with green. That little tractor seat at the far side is a good place to practice your sitting and staring.
