The opening film at MIFF was Vacationland with Karen Black, shot in Denmark, Maine, and sporting a cameo appearance by a Reny's bag. Give a director a lake in Maine, and they usually find a way to remake On Golden Pond, the template for family reconciliation movies with loon calls. The refurbished opera house in Waterville has a new sound system, a permanent sceen and comfy seats. It's my favorite MIFF venue. Can you spot Melissa and me in Sam Ranger's picture?

I am editing this on a new ultrabook, an Asus Zen Book 64 bit machine with two 128 solid state drives instead of a hard drive, and a 13.3 screen with 1600 x 900 resolution. Windows 7 compatibility mode lets me run some old stuff like Homesite editor by setting its compatibility to XP service pack 2. New tech adoptions are like ice out dates; it's good to have them here for later reference. It's phone upgrade time as well; I've ordered this new Samsung beauty in pebble blue. I always go through my local dealer, Audrey at AAA Cellular smack in the middle of Unity. While I was there a barefoot Amish girl came in to ask if some brochures were ready. She does a lot of business with the Amish who don't seem to believe in owning printers but need a lot of printing done. Similarly, they don't own cars but will pay people to drive them places. There's a lot to be said for their business model. On another techie note, I was able to get the two way encryption thingy to match the Oracle version; now we have to integrate it into Pervasive.

I could sum up our last town office committee meeting by saying that we declined the selectmen's offer of providing us with a facilitator and elected me chairperson instead. That leaves out quite a bit of high drama getting there. Meetings are all about the agenda and the minutes. I've recently learned that when a meeting is done, it doesn't matter what was said in the meeting, it matters what made it into the minutes. I've started putting our minutes online and will do the same for the selectmen, planning board, appeals board, and any other standing committees. Several small towns around us like Thorndike have their minutes online; Palermo has town ordinances and application forms online. Jesumpetes, we have to catch up.

Your food pic of the week is this berry trifle that Melissa made for Pam's birthday.
