It was the best of Novembers. It was the worst of Novembers.
It was great election results but twilight at 3:30 pm.
It was election validation of a fact-based world view but rough dealings with hard-core republican selectmen.
It was anticipation of retirement but purgatory of waiting for them to find someone else.
I hate to have to password-protect this blog occasionally, but I want to be able to say what I want freely without inviting more intimidation.
After a very tension filled selectmen's meeting last week during which I said not a word, the 75 year old code enforcement officer appeared at our house looking for code violations. Clearly a warning shot. I am shocked that they would do that but I'm not intimidated. I will continue to attend the twice monthly episodes of Two and a Half Men and speak up as needed.
Contrary to their paranoia, I had not been planning to run for selectman. But I do have a mission that includes these things:
-- Get public documents up on the web at unityme.org in the most user-friendly format. Meeting agenda and minutes especially.
-- Push to have major town decisions reached by a community process.
-- Get more people to participate in town government by attending meetings and being on committees.
Transparency, communication, community process. Not terribly radical.
We have had several town meetings this year and the folks who come to those meetings are much more moderate, pragmatic and civil than the selectmen and their cronies. It's good to know that town meeting has the final word.
