Last week's request for clues to the meaning of the music building's strange code puzzle did not go unanswered, and I am relieved to know that the truth is indeed out there. Barb will 'splain it all for you, if you click on her. Besides it will be a new experience for her. She's probably never been clicked on before. Be sure you let her know it was good for you too.
A helpful article in the latest Utne Reader gives a guide to racial diversity in the Mulatto Millennium. The categories include Standard Mulatto, African American, Jewlatto, Mestizo, Tomatto, Fauxlatto, and Cultural Mulatto. This Utne issue is mostly about gender, but race is much more interesting than gender. In a mulatto, civilizations and their histories merge in one person with interesting hair and often a great tan. The issue's focus on gender blur was not lost on David the steam locomotive repair guy guest who opted to read it in the parlor wearing a less than attractive wig. I really have better control of my facial expressions than I thought.

The course I'm taking on Computer Networks began this week. 32 students, 3 women. One black male, one Asian female, 6 Asian males, 7 white tee shirts, 4 gray tee shirts, 6 baseball caps (2 worn backwards), 9 pairs of glasses. The first time I counted the Asians, I didn't count Atiq, the Pakistani student worker with whom I'm sharing my textbook, because I know him. If you know people, they are not minorities. I'm always aware of computer class demographics, both as a teacher and a student, because it's about access to employability. Jobs are plentiful and pay is good in computer fields. Why aren't there more women in these classes?

Labor Day is a real end to summer here. We'll start to cool off soon and in a couple of weeks the reds & golds of fall will be coming on. For a moment we can step back to the essence of summer: lobster eaten at a picnic table. Here's a scene from Melissa's birthday feast this past August.

No opinions required this week...Just want to see who's out there.
