![]() Yesterday I had to spend a whole precious Saturday on a field trip to the planet of golf. I had never been to a golf course before. Unity Barn Raisers did a golf tournament as a fundraiser. I remember when a new board member suggested it and asked who played golf. No hands went up. He said there was money in it, so we the granola people agreed to do a golf tournament. Every thing had to be explained to us. I didn't work on it ahead of time, so I was especially ignorant. As the players lined up for their instructions at the start, I couldn't help but think that we had infiltrated the old boy network, figured out what they would pay for and were cheerfully taking their money. Golf is mainly a guy thing. You can tell if an event is a guy thing by the attitude toward cigar smoking; it was taken for granted. They had a big display of cigars for sale in the shop. My job was to take pictures of teams and sponsored holes. So I walked around and observed all the golf behavior; it's much more about personal interaction than about sport, but at least it's outside. In fact, the course is beautiful with paths throught woods between the holes. The paths would be great for cross country skiing in the winter. Spent a week down in Westbrook in Java training. Didn't learn much that was new to me, but as we covered each topic I thought about how we use that part of the language in our systems at work and found some things I want to have a close look at to be sure we are doing it the best way. What I did learn was a lot of ways to do creative U-turns since I was unfamiliar with the area. Here's the September mix. The Bills: you have to like a bluegrass album with an overture; and a reference to Nin, plus the word "duvet" in a song is enough for me. Lots of mentions of Katrina in songs, even if Catie Curtis doesn't get it exactly right. Alex Skolnick was really good here live. The drummer had great drummer hair. |
