A quick overnight trip to Portland was packed with good food and friends by the water. We stopped about halfway there for a dinner party at a friend's house on Cobbosseecontee Stream.
This morning some quick Bean's shopping and then a ferry ride out to Peak's Island which is actually part of Portland with Holly and Bonnie and about a 5 mile walk around the island on a glorious day. Someone had made a special memorial day display, a strip of plastic with a name and town on it for every soldier who has died in Iraq or Afganistan. They started it in 2004 when there were 852 deaths; today it was over 3400 and I guess they had to add another 8 this evening. It rippled and whispered in the breeze.
Here are some excerpts from a David Brooks column in the NYT the other day in which I recognized some folks I'm related to.
