Yesterday I took some pictures of the naming and launching of a community sailboat, Ponder. Barn Raisers got a grant for this boatbuilding program about a year ago and the refurbishing of this boat by volunteers was the first project. It was just great to see this thing put into the water, towed there by Greg Rossel's 1954 Willys Pickup. Maybe they could do a rowing gig next.

On the September Mix, four groups who have performed here this year. I wish we had recorded the Mammals doing WarTime Blues with the big sound of the crowd doing the call and response. It's a song written by Blind Lemon Jefferson in 1929, and revived by Pete Seeger in the 70's and now revived by the Mammals. If you want a song that get a new life every 30 years, write about war. I like knowing what people like on the mix; I'm usually surprised by it. For this purpose I'm made a simple feedback form with two questions. So if you get the mix, please put some info on the form from time to time. I am enjoying the last stages of the old music distribution model, where you can buy albums or download songs. In a few years it will be replaced by some sort of subscription model, kind of like satellite radio, but available in more ways and in highly personalized channels that cut across many genres. Melissa ran a yard sale yesterday at Farmers Market for trails. Jim Reed donated his collection of vinyl, really classic stuff. This guy Jud was helping Melissa and grooving over the album covers and suggested buying them as art. CD covers are too small for real impact; you realize that when looking at the "huge" LP sleeves. I bought my first one, this classic Tom Waits, to be framed in the basement office. OTR's "Don't Wait for Tom" song on this month's mix is supposedly about Tom Waits.

Our friend Meredith stopped by to pick up stuff her mom (her parents are our Newport connection) had sent with us and she told us about her new cat Dirt whose story is told here. See why she was such a great house/pet sitter?

After 10 years I've finally made a simple change that allows the Picayunity link to be bookmarked so that the current page always comes up when you go there. So bookmark this page now and you'll be set for the next ten years. Blueberry season has passed and we are in peak tomato season; Melissa is making huge batches of tomato sauce; in the middle of winter we will have little vine-ripened moments. Apple season has just begun with the early varieties, my favorite of which is one called Liveland Raspberry, grown in Unity by someone named Howard who brought back a stem of his grandfather's tree in Germany. Liveland is a twisted translation of Lithuania.
