Finally it's here, real summer. Our outside rooms are back in business and the green leaves all around. Right on time actually. Memorial Day is the last frost date for gardeners. The dock is an outside room and we have the first section of it in. The new flags came home with us from New Orleans as did the Burris Chicken. We bought it at the Burris Farm Market in Loxley, Alabama on the way to the beach. The market's a big wooden pavillion with ceiling fans that's been there as long as I've been going to Gulf Shores. We always load up with stuff. Now we can think of that drowsy feeling of the ceiling fans and the stacks of fresh strawberries when we look at the Burris Chicken.
Yesterday we had an early birthday cookout for Melissa's mom and a small gathering of friends. She and Linda have the same birthday and celebrate it together. None of our friends here have ever heard of Treme or John Besh or doberge cake or Snooks Eaglin. Melissa is working on her doberge cake recipe. The icing is not right yet. It should be thin, dark and shiny. But it is very yummy. Each layer is baked separately; luckily the 8 inch cake pans I ordered online arrived just in time. This is the first of the Tables of Summer. You'll be seeing many more.
