season of light

June 21 , 2016

The season of light from 4 am to 9 pm is upon us and every weekend seems overscheduled with events. Last Saturday we canoed with an SRLT group on the Sebasticook, starting in Benton, and ending at Fort Halifax where the Sebasticook and Kennebec merge. Saw a lot of birds and got startled by a beaver flapping his tail near the canoe. Two other social events followed that, so that Sunday was hide at home day. On a paddle around the islands, I saw that the cormorants were sharing their rock with some gulls, and that there are some cairns on the smallest island. The lake is low, but the water quality is still good. We have each acquired inflatable life vests. They are much less cumbersome so that I actually wear one instead of having it with me.

I try not to be too political on FaceBook, but the assault rifle mass murder pushes me over the edge. No civilian needs a weapon of mass murder. What will it take to get some reasonable gun laws? Twenty murdered six year olds didn't do it. I responded to a post on a Bernie Sanders page just to test the level of civility of the response. Those folks are pretty testy in this tricky period where their candidate has lost but not yet conceded and told them how to carry on. The election is terrifying and wildly entertaining all at once. "Flailing" is how Cheeto Jesus's campaign is being described at this point. There's a long way to go but if I had to guess I think Hillary will win in a landslide.

steampunk house

This spring we got a load of local fresh-cut cedar boards and rebuilt our raised beds. A ton of work, but I'm pleased with the results. We also took down the front fence, left over from when we had two giant dogs. All around the remaining fence, I planted sugar snap peas, my favorite. It's a wonderful season. Yesterday coming down the camp road after my first bike ride was like entering the green zone. Maximum new green everywhere.

It didn't take much convincing to get Bahoosh to bid on the building next to ours, the old town office, when it came up for sale with a minimum bid of $5,000. His was the highest of 5 bids at $11,111. I am super pleased that he got it, because he will renovate it while keeping the cool steampunk artifacts. There is not much demand for commercial space in town right now, so he will probably turn it into a one-bedroom house. The vault (it was a bank at one time) will become the coolest pantry ever.

This little narrow shelf table was the only thing I claimed out of Diane's apartment when she moved. I knew immediately what it would be good for. It's nice to have so many that I can give them away as presents. My neice Maria has recently moved into her own house. I think she needs a starter set.
