For Melissa's birthday, we picked a spot on the map within a 4 hour radius and went there for three days. St. Andrew's By the Sea in New Brunswick. Just a strip of shops and restaurants and cottages on Passamaquoddy Bay where the difference between high and low tide is 25 feet and you can sit in an Adirondack chair with a book and look across the bay at Maine. Funny Money made shopping fun.
In the week before that, Veda and Musa, the folks we met last JazzFest visit through a Dave Cash connection, were here getting hooked on kayacks.
Veda noticed that everyone in Maine carries stuff on top their car. Musa noticed that there were no gears on kayaks that constantly need adjusting. So they went up to Old Town and came home with 4 yellow kayaks roped to the top of their van; paddles, vests, the whole nine yards. Keep an eye out for those in Bayou St. John. While they were here we traded in the tandem ("divorce material") Loon for a single seater Castine with a rudder kit. It has two storage compartments. Recently, we put wine in the front one, a basket of veggies in the rear one, and paddled down to the Nees camp for dinner. Vickie and Larry Nees are the parents of Alex who stayed with us last January. Old Town should cut us in for a commission. Mike and Sandy McCabe were up visiting Jeff and Sarah recently and they bought their second Loon. Go Sandy! We went out with them for soul satisfying comfort food at Freedom Cafe.
Both here in Unity and at UMaine in Orono, the students are drifting back into town. Another academic year is about to crank up. However, it appears that I am about to become a drop out from academia where too often process IS the product. Stay tuned.
