I went to work on Wednesday with two simple goals: don't throw up and don't burst into tears. Since then I've been in various stages of depression and from time to time I go to bed and hide under the comforter. The news is too depressing to watch and it's about to get worse. I feel that we have experienced a point in time when our country turned toward the dark side, toward empire building and intolerance. Our fundementalists against their fundementalists. I have to turn away from watching.

Tuesday night I was a vote counter. About 1200 people voted in Unity, a record turnout. Seven pairs of counters, a Democrat and a Republican in each pair, counted and recounted ballots until both counters agreed on the tally. I was paired with a pleasant lady named Agnes whom I hadn't met before. Later I realized that she was the wife of a minister who writes scary letters to the editor against abortion and homosexuals. We finished after 1 am. Kerry won in Unity by 3 votes.

All we have left is civility. We despise each others views, but we don't shoot each other or bomb the market place. Even the most negative campaign is still words and pictures, not physical violence.

I was in Mr. Paperback in Belfast and walked up to the counter with a book, What's The Matter With Kansas. I asked the clerk, "Is this what the broken-hearted are reading?" She said find Amy Goodman on Dish channel 9415.

Here is a good article in the New York Times about election reform.
