Time in the warehouse/arts district. Skipped the WWII museum because I didn't want to steep myself in war on such a beautiful day, but did appreciate their skeleton of new construction. The Odgen Museum of Southern Art took my mind away even though some rooms were closed prepping for a show the next night. A room full of Walter Anderson. The building itself is a joy. The other Andersson of the day was a fantastic performance by Theresa Andersson at the free Wednesdays in the Square series. I had heard some of her new album because I kickstarted it and I thought it might be too ethereal for some, but performed live it was street parade, flambeau, injuns and all. A more mythic and anthemic interpretation of black parade culture. She ended with that solo looped version of "Find the Cost of Freedom."
It's navy week in NOLA although people seemed to be dressed in the usual array of colors. Luc, our sweet French nephew-in-law, invited us to tour the French frigate Germinal and he served as interpreter. I understand enough French to know that in this photo he is saying, "Wake up, Captain, it's show time." Afterwards in the tiny courtyard of El Gato Negro I had the best veggie taco ever.
In total contrast to the rowdy crowd in the square on Wednesday was the genteel gathering in the pavillion of two sisters in City Park last evening to hear John Boutte. Another of my musical heroes, Paul Soniat, introduced him. We sat inside in chairs and sipped mint juleps. While we listened I gathered his interesting new CD into my music cloud with my phone.
At intermission we walked through the gardens surrounding the building, all wonderfully restored since the storm. The most impressive plant is an ancient sprawling oak. My sister Colleen pointed out how their lateral branching close to the ground helps them survive hurricanes. Saw old friends Veda and Musa there. We hope to visit their gardens while we are here. Coming down a week early before the JazzFest crowds arrive has let us do lots of stuff we don't usually get to do.
