Stayed two nights with our pals Anita and Malissa in Covington. We hit the farmers market there, made another trip to the Dew Drop where we heard Tuba Skinny, and had dinner at a new Chimes restaurant that had elaborate decks down to the Abita River and goats grazing under the decks. Melissa had the BBQ shrimp and grits and we chose from multiple beer samplers.
Wonderfully cool weather for riding the Tammany Trace. Yesterday, after a Mandy's breakfast (Steen's cane syrup!) with our General Consultant, we did Mandeville to Lacombe and back. Back on the south shore in the evening we met Mel, Jinx, and Cheryl at Chickie Wah Wah for some solo Jon Cleary. His new CD is all covers of Allen Toussaint songs, including my campaign song, "Everything I do gonna be funky."
Not sure what the first sign means, but it was near a movie set in the warehouse district. There is always a movie set happening somewhere in New Orleans. The other sign is on the Trace bridge over Bayou Lacombe. Maybe 7:30 pm is the time for sunset on that day.
Today was Baton Rouge day and we had lunch with my sisters Ingrid and Claudia and niece Maria and met the fabulous 16 month old Lily. I like to see my sisters' houses so I can picture them where they live. They both have nice homes with wonderful kitchens. It's a long drive from Ingrid's house to Claudia's during which you cannot help but conclude that Baton Rouge is a sprawling soulless wasteland of endless repetitions of Walgreens and auto parts stores, a city with no design in mind but a love of roads. Ingrid has been active in a faith group that successfully promoted a bond issue to keep public transportation going in the city; without a car there you might as well live on the moon.
