Last weekend and into this week we had a huge amount of rainfall and rivers and lakes rose quite a bit, in our case higher than our dock. No problem. I picked up the lightweight cedar decking and stacked it on shore so it wouldn't float away. When the water level goes down, I'll put it back on. We should be drinking wine on the dock again in a few days.
The June Mix is still heavily New Orleans tilted. The Revivalists and Hurray For the Riff Raff are both NOLA bands. The Jackson Browne song is insanely great. In 1998 three friends from New Orleans came up to visit and we played albums for each other. Since then the refrain from one of those albums has echoed in my head from time to time. I finally chased down the phrase "Diving To Be Deeper," bought the out of print album used on Amazon and included the Sinead Lohan cut on the June mix. Everything else is from new releases. The other day I was trying to remember how many first cousins I have. At least 35, but could be 40. I will have to ask my sister Claudia who has the best memory for family things. My favorite first cousin at this time is the writer/editor Mark Warren. This piece about his father just blew me away, not because his father was crueler than I knew, but because it is so wonderfully written. If I ask why women stayed with abusive men back then, the answer comes down to the fact that birth control wasn't an option yet; the pill didn't come along until the 1960's. Both men and women were trapped into the servitude of supporting and caring for too damn many children; divorce meant serious poverty and was forbidden by the church anyhow. My parents were in that trap too. I'm from a family of 6 girls; Mark is from a family of 6 boys. Our parents spent most of their lives being overwhelmed.
The last flyers have been handed to people, the last email sent out to my local network. The voting is on Tuesday. As someone said to me yesterday, "the worst that could happen is that you could win." |

They have names now, Roux and Chai, and they are so wicked cute that I'm afraid you'll have to put up with their pictures for a while. |
