On my commute this week I passed a new Hallelujah Engine as I think of it, the farm implement equivalent of a grand chorale or maybe a Pentecostal church choir approaching hysteria. I had never seen a shiny new one, just old rusted ones in the fields. You have to admit, there is quite a bit going on in that thing.

The deadline for filing candidate papers for selectman was Friday, and we have a field of four. This is fairly unusual. Often there is just one candidate and not well advertised. I am here to change that. I posted our photos and statements on unitymaine.org which I maintain. Sue, the town clerk, will issue a press release. I have no idea how this thing will work out. I see a couple of things in my bio that might make some conservative locals not vote for me. Gay and from away kind of sums it up. On the other hand, the boys might split up the conservative vote and let me squeak by. The election is June 12.

Summer has come a week early with high temps around 80. Yesterday I planted beans and okra, yes okra because in Louisiana I saw a billboard advertising Zatarain's fish fry and it said, "As seen on Okra." This is the year we get a new dock. The old wooden one we made ourselves years ago is just too heavy to handle. The dock guy from Hammond Lumber came out last week to measure us for an aluminum dock with cedar decking. When we get the quote, we will probably see that we can afford one 4 foot section, but it's a start.

Bike rides around the lake on both weekend mornings. Melissa joined me this morning. I love the intense green of the new ferns and how they stretch to infinity in the woods. New ferns means fiddleheads and Melissa has promised to make some Fiddlehead Tempura
