Our solar roof panels have just finished their first month. This is a report on the daily and total output. They made over 600 kilowatt hours of juice. We use about 300 kwh a month. The extra kwh we made will be credited to our CMP account and we can spend those credits in the winter when we use more. To soak up some of that extra juice we are taking some heating functions off the oil furnace and using efficient electric appliances instead. Next week our hybrid heat-pump/coil hot water heater gets installed and we get estimates for heat pumps. So far everything we have bought or will buy for this changeover comes with rebates and tax credits. This includes the energy audit to be done by Evergreen out of Belfast. We won't be able to afford everything they recommend, but we will do what we can. The goal is eventually to get off oil and on to cleaner electricity and to save a bunch of money. The oil furnace will remain as back up for now, but it is over 20 years old and when it dies we won't replace it.

There is a lot of data available that could let us monitor and adapt our energy behavior. CMP hasn't rolled out Energy Manager yet, but when they do I will be able to see what we are using by the hour and compare it to what we are producing.

Today we met Peter, Janna, and Julia in Damariscotta for lunch. King Eider Pub does indeed have the best crab cakes anywhere. Julia toured us around the Darling Marine Center where she works with her brand new marine biology degree. We allowed time in Damariscotta for the dual Reny's and the fabulous Maine Coast Book Shop where I bought a signed copy of Jennifer Finney Boylan's new one. On the way out we got a look at the tiny house Jim is building just off Main Street.
